Run one Deep Research report, drop it and its sources into a Gemini Notebook, ask questions with citations, then get a podcast-style Audio Overview or a narrated Video Overview to share.

Grok Bot.
Quick answer
- Three Google tools work as one research system.
Gemini Deep Research finds and reads the sources. Gemini Notebook (the new name for
NotebookLM) keeps them and answers questions with citations. Audio and Video Overviews turn them into something you can listen to or watch.
- It's mostly free.
Gemini Notebook is free with up to 50 sources per notebook. Deep Research needs you to be 18+.
- Why chain them? Deep Research is great at finding. A Notebook is great at sticking to your sources: it answers from what you added, with citations you can click.
- Audio Overviews come in Deep Dive, Brief, Critique and Debate formats, in 80+ languages, and you can even join in (Interactive mode).
- Video Overviews come as Cinematic (18+, English only), Explainer or Short (about 60 seconds). They can take 30+ minutes to make.
Comparison table
Which one should I use? The verdict
- Big new topic? Start with Deep Research in
Gemini, then move the report and sources into a Notebook. - Already have your documents? Start in the Notebook, and use its built-in Deep Research to add web sources.
- Studying or commuting? Audio Overview, Deep Dive format.
- Need to convince someone? Debate or Critique format.
- Sharing with people who won't read: Video Overview, Short or Explainer.
Quick questions
Is NotebookLM gone? No, it's renamed
Gemini Notebook (July 2026). Same tool, new name.
Is it free? Yes, with limits: 50 sources per notebook on the free plan. Some Video Overview features need you to be 18+, and co-creating video is Ultra only.
How is a Notebook different from asking
Gemini? A Notebook answers from your sources and shows citations for each claim. Normal
Gemini answers from everything it knows and the web.
Can I share a notebook? Yes. Public sharing works on consumer (personal) accounts only.
How long does it take? Deep Research: about 5–10 minutes. Audio Overview: a few minutes. Video Overview: can take 30+ minutes.
Before you start
- Pick a topic you care about. "Should we move to [city]?", "What are the treatment options for my dad's diagnosis?", "Is there a market for [product] in my town?"
- Gather what you already have: PDFs, Google Docs, links, YouTube videos, notes.
- Health, legal and money topics: this is for understanding, not decisions. Bring your notes to a professional.
Step 1: Run Deep Research in
Gemini
- Go to gemini.google.com (18+).
- Choose Add Files (+) → Deep Research.
- Choose Sources: web, and Gmail or Drive if they help.
- Paste your question (use the scoping interview from A1 to sharpen it first):
Research [topic] for [who I am / my situation].
Include: [what matters]. Exclude: [what doesn't].
Prefer official, academic and recent sources (last [2] years).
End with: key findings, open questions, and a list of all sources with links.
- Choose Edit plan if it needs changes, then Start research. It takes about 5–10 minutes.
- In the canvas panel: Share & export → Export to Docs.
Step 2: Build the Notebook
- Open
Gemini Notebook and create a new notebook.
- Add sources:
- The Google Doc you exported in Step 1.
- The most important links from its source list (pick 10–20, not all).
- Your own files (PDFs, Docs, notes, YouTube links).
- Or research from inside: Add sources → turn on Web and Deep Research (or use Fast Research for a quick search). When it's done, import only the sources you want.
Limits: 50 sources per notebook on the free plan. Each source can be up to 500,000 words or 200 MB.
Step 3: Ask questions with citations
In the notebook chat:
Using only these sources, what are the 5 most important findings about [topic]? Cite each one.
Where do my sources disagree? Make a table: Topic | Source A says | Source B says.
What questions do these sources NOT answer? What should I look for next?
Click each citation number to see the exact passage. If a claim has no citation, treat it as unverified.
Step 4: Make an Audio Overview
- In the notebook's Studio panel, choose Audio Overview, then customize it.
- Pick a format:
- Deep Dive: a full conversation between two hosts.
- Brief: a short summary.
- Critique: expert-style feedback on your sources.
- Debate: two sides argue it out.
- Pick a length and language (80+ available).
- Add a focus:
Focus on what a [parent / first-time buyer / small-business owner] needs to decide. Explain terms simply. End with 3 next steps.
- Generate. Interactive mode lets you join the conversation and ask the hosts a question while it plays.
Step 5: Make a Video Overview
- In the Studio panel, choose Video Overview and pick a type:
- Cinematic: the most polished (18+, English only).
- Explainer: a narrated slide-style walkthrough.
- Short: about 60 seconds, good for sharing.
- Pick a visual style and add a focus prompt (same as above).
- Generate. It can take 30 minutes or more, so start it and come back.
- Co-creating (editing the video with
Gemini step by step) is on Ultra only.
Share it
- Share the notebook: public sharing works on personal accounts only. Check what's in your sources before you share; people can see them.
- Share the Overview: download it or share the notebook link.
- Share the report: the Google Doc from Step 1 is easy to send.
The others
ChatGPT,
Claude,
Grok, Perplexity: each can do the research step (see A1: Deep Research That's Actually Right). None has a source-grounded notebook with podcast-style audio and video overviews like
Gemini Notebook that we could confirm.
Grok's voice mode can talk through a report with you live, and ChatGPT and
Claude Projects hold files for follow-up questions.
Try it: 3 worked examples
1. A school choice (parent)
- Deep Research:
Compare [School A], [School B], [School C] for a [grade] student who [needs]. Include test scores, programs, class sizes, commute from [area]. - Notebook: add the report, each school's website and your tour notes.
- Audio Overview: Debate, "School A vs School B for my kid."
2. A health question (family)
- Deep Research:
Explain [condition]: common treatments, how well they work, side effects, questions to ask the doctor. Prefer medical society and government health sources. - Notebook: add the report and the doctor's handouts.
- Audio Overview: Brief, focus "plain-language explanation for family." Bring your questions to the doctor.
3. A small-business market (owner)
- Deep Research:
Is there demand for [product] in [town]? Competitors, prices, local trends. - Notebook: add the report, competitor pages and your own sales notes.
- Video Overview: Explainer, to share with a partner or lender.
Common mistakes and fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Notebook answers feel thin | Add better sources: official reports, not just blog posts |
| Hit the 50-source limit | Remove weak sources; one strong report beats ten weak links |
| Audio is too long | Choose Brief or a shorter length |
| Video taking forever | Normal; it can take 30+ minutes. Check back later |
| Cinematic option missing | It's for 18+ and English only |
| Can't share publicly | Public sharing is for personal accounts only |
| Deep Research missed something | Edit the plan before you start, or add the source to the notebook yourself |
