AI agent vs chatbot, in plain English
A chatbot answers. You ask a question, it writes a reply, and then it stops. You do the work.
An AI agent acts. You give it a goal, and it takes steps to get there. It might open websites, read your email, fill in forms, or run a task every morning. It keeps going until the job is done, or until it needs you.
Think of it this way:
- Chatbot: "Here's how to find a cheaper flight."
- Agent: "I found 3 cheaper flights. Want me to book option 2?"
The five agents on this page each have their own computer in the cloud (or one you set up). That's what lets them work while you're away.
How to safely let an agent act for you: 7 rules
- Start read-only. Let it read and report before it sends, buys, or deletes anything.
- Use "allow once" for anything that leaves your hands. Sending, posting, buying, and sharing personal info. Avoid "always allow" for those.
- Connect only what the job needs. Every connected app is something it can see. Remove apps you stop using.
- Never paste passwords or codes in chat. Use the agent's "take over" or secure sign-in step.
- Keep private details out of templates. In one reported case, an agent shared a seller's home address with Marketplace buyers after he tapped "Allow Always."
- Test before you schedule. Run a task by hand 2–3 times before making it recurring.
- Review weekly. Check the activity log, permissions, and scheduled tasks. Know how to pause it.
Remember: disconnecting an app may not delete what the agent already learned. Muse and
Dots both say so in their help pages.

FAQ
What is an AI agent in simple terms? An AI that does tasks for you, not just answers. It can use websites and apps, follow steps, and work on a schedule.
Is an AI agent safe to use? It can be, if you set it up carefully. Start read-only, approve each send or purchase, and connect only what you need.
Which personal AI agent is free?
Muse has a free plan with limits (US and Canada).
Hermes Agent is free software, though AI models may cost money.
Grok Bot, Dots, and
Gemini Spark require paid plans (
Gemini Spark is the cheapest at $19.99 with Google AI Pro).
Do I need an agent if I already use ChatGPT?
Not always. If you mostly ask questions and write, a chatbot is enough. Agents help when you have repeat tasks across apps.
Are these the same as "
Grok," "Meta AI," or "
ChatGPT"?
No. Those are chatbots.
Grok Bot, Muse,
Dots, and
Gemini Spark (now the "Task" button in
Gemini) are agent products from the same companies.
Hermes Agent is from Nous Research.
