Perplexity for Beginners: The AI Search Engine That Shows Its Sources
Prices and features checked October 14, 2026.
What is
Perplexity?
Perplexity is an AI search engine made by a company called Perplexity AI. Instead of a list of links, it gives you a written answer with numbered sources you can click. You can use it at perplexity.ai, in its phone apps, and in its own web browser, called Comet.
If you've ever thought, "Where did the AI get that?", Perplexity is built for you.
Key strengths
- Sources in every answer. Perplexity answers with citations, so you can check the facts yourself.
- The free plan covers basic searching. Perplexity says Free includes "practically unlimited basic searches," 3 Pro Searches a day, and 1 Research query a month.
- Pro lets you pick top models from other companies. Pro includes advanced models such as GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.6, and Gemini 3.1 Pro, per Perplexity's help center.
- Research mode writes full reports. Research mode does multi-step digging and writes a long report for you.
- A real student discount. Education Pro is $10 a month for verified students and educators.

How-to guides
1. How to get a quick answer with sources
Who it's for: Anyone who wants an answer they can trust and check.
Steps:
- Go to perplexity.ai, or open the app.
- Sign up for a free account (or log in). Your search history is saved.
- Type your question like you'd ask a friend.
- Press Enter.
- Read the answer. Look for the small numbers.
- Click a number to open that source.
- Ask a follow-up in the box below.
Copy-paste prompts:
How much water should a 40-year-old drink each day? Use medical sources only.
What's the difference between a Roth IRA and a traditional IRA? Explain simply and cite official sources.
Pro tip: Add "use official sources" or "use .gov sources" to your question. You'll get better links.
Common mistake: Not clicking the sources. A source can be old or off-topic. Spend 30 seconds checking the important ones.
2. How to research a product before you buy
Who it's for: Shoppers who don't want to read 20 reviews.
Steps:
- Open Perplexity.
- Type your budget, what you need, and what matters most.
- Ask for a short comparison table.
- Read the sources for each pick.
- Ask follow-ups, like "which is quietest?"
- Check the current price on the store's site before you buy.
Copy-paste prompts:
Best budget robot vacuum under $300 in 2026 for pet hair. Compare 3 options in a table with price, battery life, and main complaint. Cite reviews.
I need a laptop for a college student, under $700, mostly for writing and video calls. Give me 3 picks and the trade-offs.
Pro tip: Ask for "the most common complaint" about each product. Reviews often hide the deal-breakers.
Common mistake: Trusting prices in the answer. Prices change daily. Always check the store page.
3. How to find sources for a school paper
Who it's for: High school and college students.
Steps:
- Open Perplexity and sign in.
- Type your topic as a question.
- Ask for scholarly or academic sources.
- Open each source and read the part you plan to use.
- Write your own notes in your own words.
- Cite the original source (not Perplexity) in your paper.
Copy-paste prompts:
Find 5 credible sources on how social media affects teen sleep. For each, give the title, author, year, and one-sentence summary.
What are the main arguments for and against school uniforms? List sources for each side.
Pro tip: If you're a verified student, Education Pro ($10/month) includes Learn Mode and more Pro features.
Common mistake: Copying Perplexity's answer into your paper. That can count as plagiarism. Use it to find sources, then read and write yourself.
4. How to get a full Research report
Who it's for: Professionals and small business owners who need a deep look at a topic.
Steps:
- Open Perplexity and sign in.
- In the search box, switch the mode to Research.
- Type a detailed question.
- Wait while it searches and writes. This takes longer than a normal search.
- Read the report and its sources.
- Ask follow-ups to fill in gaps.
Copy-paste prompts:
Research the market for mobile dog grooming in Texas: typical prices, startup costs, licensing rules, and who the main competitors are. Cite sources.
Write a research report on the pros and cons of a 4-day work week, using studies from the last 5 years.
Pro tip: Free gives you only 1 Research query a month. Save it for a question that really matters.
Common mistake: Treating a report as final. Use it as a starting point, then check the key numbers.
5. How to keep ongoing research in a Project
Who it's for: Freelancers, hobby researchers, and anyone working on a topic over weeks.
Steps:
- Open Perplexity and sign in.
- Find Projects in the left menu. (Projects used to be called Spaces.)
- Create a new Project and name it.
- Add instructions, like "focus on US sources."
- Upload files you want it to use. Pro allows up to 50 files per project.
- Run your searches inside the Project so everything stays together.
Copy-paste prompts (for the Project's instructions):
This Project is about planning my kitchen remodel. Focus on US prices, building codes, and reviews. Keep answers short with a table when comparing.
You help me track news about electric vehicles. Each time I ask, summarize what's new this week with sources.
Pro tip: Keep one Project per big topic. Mixing topics makes answers messier.
Common mistake: Uploading private documents without thinking. Only upload what you're comfortable sharing.
Free vs paid: which
Perplexity plan should you get?
US prices, checked October 14, 2026.
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free (Standard) | $0 | Practically unlimited basic searches, 3 Pro Searches/day, 1 Research query/month, limited uploads. No image generation or advanced models |
| Pro | $20/month, or $200/year (about $17/month) | More Pro Searches and Research, advanced models, image and video generation, Comet browser assistant, more uploads |
| Education Pro | $10/month | Everything in Pro plus Learn Mode, for verified students and educators |
| Max | $200/month or $2,000/year | Highest limits, newest models first, Max Assistant in Comet, priority support |
Notes:
- Perplexity's Pro price comes from a dated third-party check of its pricing page (its pricing page didn't load for us). The Max and Education Pro prices are from Perplexity's own help center.
- Team plans start at $40 per seat a month (Enterprise Pro).
When is upgrading worth it?
- Stay on Free if you ask a few questions a day and don't need Research mode.
- Get Education Pro ($10) if you're a verified student or teacher. It's half the price of Pro.
- Get Pro ($20) if you hit the 3 Pro Searches a day often, want more Research reports, or want to choose models like Claude and GPT in one place.
- Skip Max ($200) unless research is your full-time job.
Limitations, and when to use a different AI
- It's a researcher, not a writer. For long, polished writing, use Claude or ChatGPT.
- Free has no image generation. For images, try ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, or Midjourney.
- Sources aren't always right. Perplexity cites, but a cited source can still be wrong or outdated.
- Studying your own files? NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook) stays inside your sources.
- What people are posting on X right now? Grok.
- Inside Office or Google apps? Microsoft Copilot or Gemini.
- Free chat with no paid tiers? DeepSeek (check privacy). Or Meta AI in WhatsApp and Instagram.
