Claude for Beginners: What It Is, How to Use It, and Is It Worth It?
Prices and features checked October 14, 2026.
What is
Claude?
Claude is an AI assistant made by a company called Anthropic. You can use it on the web at claude.ai, in the desktop app, and in the iPhone and Android apps. Paid plans also add Claude in the Chrome browser, Claude for Microsoft 365, and Claude Code for programmers.
People often pick Claude for writing, editing, and working with long documents.
Key strengths
- A generous free plan. Free includes web search, file creation, running code, memory across chats, connecting your apps, Artifacts, voice mode, and up to 5 Projects.
- Handles very long documents. Anthropic lists a context window of "up to 1M" tokens, depending on the model. In plain English, that means it can read a lot of text at once.
- Artifacts: build little tools without coding. Claude can create documents, simple web apps, and interactive tools you can see and use right in the chat. This is on every plan.
- Projects for repeat work. A Project holds your files and instructions, so you don't have to explain yourself every time. Free gets up to 5. Paid plans get unlimited.
- Claude Code for people who code. Every paid plan includes Claude Code, Anthropic's coding tool. It shares the same usage pool as your chats.
- Training opt-out on every plan. Anthropic's pricing page lists model training as "Opt-out" for Free, Pro, and Max.

How-to guides
1. How to edit your writing with
Claude
Who it's for: Anyone polishing a cover letter, essay, blog post, or work email.
Steps:
- Go to claude.ai, or open the Claude app.
- Click Sign up and create a free account.
- Click in the chat box.
- Paste your writing.
- Tell Claude what to keep and what to fix.
- Ask it to list each change and why.
- Accept the changes you like. Ignore the rest.
Copy-paste prompts:
Edit this cover letter for clarity and grammar. Keep my voice. Then list each change you made and why. [paste letter]
Here's my blog post. Don't rewrite it. Just point out the 5 weakest sentences and suggest a better version of each. [paste post]
Pro tip: Say "keep my voice" or "don't make it sound like AI." Claude will make lighter edits.
Common mistake: Accepting every change. You know your audience best. Treat Claude like an editor, not the boss.
2. How to ask questions about a long PDF
Who it's for: People with contracts, reports, research papers, or manuals.
Steps:
- Open Claude and sign in.
- Click the + or paperclip button by the chat box.
- Upload your PDF.
- Ask a specific question, not just "summarize."
- Ask Claude to quote the exact words it used.
- Open the PDF and check the quotes.
Copy-paste prompts:
Which parts of this contract let them raise the price? Quote the exact sentences and tell me where they appear.
Read this report and give me: the main finding, 3 surprising facts, and 3 questions I should ask my boss about it.
Pro tip: Asking for exact quotes makes it easy to check Claude's work. If a quote isn't in the file, you know something's off.
Common mistake: Uploading private files without thinking. Don't upload anything you're not allowed to share, like company secrets or other people's medical records.
3. How to build a simple tool with Artifacts
Who it's for: Non-coders who want a quick calculator, checklist, or planner.
Steps:
- Open Claude and sign in.
- Describe the tool you want in plain words.
- Press Enter. Claude builds it in a panel next to the chat.
- Try it out right there.
- Tell Claude what to change.
- When you're happy, use the panel's buttons to copy, download, or share it.
Copy-paste prompts:
Build a simple tip calculator I can use in my browser. Let me enter the bill, pick a tip percentage, and split it between people.
Make an interactive checklist for moving to a new apartment, grouped by "2 weeks before," "1 week before," and "moving day." Let me tick items off.
Pro tip: Start simple. Get a basic version working, then add one feature at a time.
Common mistake: Using a homemade tool for important money or health math without checking it. Test it with numbers you already know the answer to.
4. How to set up a Project for repeat tasks
Who it's for: Freelancers, small business owners, and anyone who does the same kind of task every week.
Steps:
- Open Claude and sign in.
- Click Projects in the left menu.
- Click to create a new project and give it a name.
- Add your instructions, like "Always write in a friendly tone."
- Upload files Claude should know about, like your price list.
- Start every new chat inside that Project.
Copy-paste prompts (for the Project's instructions box):
You are my writing helper for my dog-walking business, Happy Paws. Write in a warm, friendly tone. Keep posts under 100 words. Always use my price list when prices come up.
You help me answer customer emails. Be polite and short. If you don't know the answer from my files, say so. Don't guess.
Pro tip: Tell Claude to say "I don't know" when the answer isn't in your files. That cuts down on made-up answers.
Common mistake: Making too many Projects on the free plan. Free gets up to 5, so group related work together.
5. How to start coding with
Claude Code
Who it's for: Beginners who are learning to code and have a paid plan (Pro or Max).
Steps:
- Subscribe to Claude Pro (or Max).
- Go to Anthropic's Claude Code page and follow the install steps for your computer.
- Open the project folder you want to work on.
- Start Claude Code and sign in with your Claude account.
- Describe one small change in plain English.
- Read the changes Claude suggests before you accept them.
- Test your app after each change.
Copy-paste prompts:
Explain what each file in this project does, in simple words. I'm a beginner.
Add a "dark mode" button to this web page. Show me what you plan to change before you change it.
Pro tip: Ask Claude to explain its plan first. You'll learn more, and you'll catch mistakes early.
Common mistake: Accepting big changes you don't understand. Use version control (like Git) or make a backup copy before you start, so you can undo.
Free vs paid: which
Claude plan should you get?
US prices, checked October 14, 2026.
| Plan | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Trying Claude; writing, files, Artifacts, up to 5 Projects |
| Pro | $20/month, or $17/month billed yearly ($200 up front) | Daily users; adds more usage, Research, Claude Code, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, more models, unlimited Projects |
| Max | From $100/month (5x Pro usage) or $200/month (20x Pro usage) | People who use Claude all day; adds priority access and monthly API credits |
Notes:
- Every plan has usage limits that reset on a rolling 5-hour window. Paid plans also have weekly limits.
- Anthropic says Pro gives at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free.
- Max is billed monthly only.
When is upgrading worth it?
- Stay on Free if you use Claude a few times a week for writing and reading files.
- Get Pro if you keep hitting the free limit, want the Research feature, want the stronger Opus models, or want Claude Code.
- Get Max only if you hit Pro limits every week, often because of heavy coding. Start with the $100 tier before trying $200.
Limitations, and when to use a different AI
- No photo-style image generator listed. Anthropic's plan list doesn't include a text-to-image generator like ChatGPT's. (It does list Claude Design, Slides, and Docs, which we haven't tested for this guide.) For pictures, use ChatGPT, Gemini, or Midjourney.
- Usage limits can surprise you. Long chats and big files use up your limit faster. If you need many short answers a day, ChatGPT or Gemini free may stretch further.
- Want sources for every answer? Perplexity is built around citations.
- Studying your own notes? NotebookLM (now Gemini Notebook) can turn them into audio overviews, quizzes, and flashcards.
- Live news from X? Grok.
- Working mostly in Word, Excel, and Outlook? Microsoft Copilot is built into those apps.
- Want a free option with no paid tiers? DeepSeek (check its privacy policy first).
- Already on WhatsApp or Instagram all day? Meta AI is built in.
FAQ
Is Claude free? Yes. Claude has a free plan that includes chat, web search, file uploads, Artifacts, memory, voice mode, and up to 5 Projects. Paid plans start at $20 a month.
Is Claude worth it? Claude Pro is worth it if you write or read long documents every day, or if you want Claude Code. If you only use it a few times a week, the free plan is often enough.
Claude vs ChatGPT: which is better? It depends on the job. Claude is popular for careful writing and long documents. ChatGPT does more things in one app, like making images. Both have free plans, so test the same task in each.
Claude Pro vs Max: what's the difference? Max gives you 5x or 20x the usage of Pro, higher output limits, priority access at busy times, and monthly API credits. It costs $100 or $200 a month. Most beginners don't need it.
Does Claude have a free trial? Anthropic doesn't list a standard free trial of Pro on its pricing page. The free plan is how you try it. You can cancel Pro anytime, and it runs until the end of your billing period.
