What is Hermes logoHermes Agent?

Hermes Agent is a free, open-source AI agent from Nous Research. "Open source" means anyone can read and use the code for free under the MIT license.

Hermes remembers your projects, creates its own "skills" from tasks it solves, and runs scheduled jobs in plain language. You can chat with it in its desktop app or terminal, or from Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, email, and more.

What does "self-hosting" mean?

Most AI apps run on the company's computers. With Hermes, you choose where it runs. That's self-hosting.

  • On your own computer. Easiest. Free. But it only works while your computer is on.
  • On a rented server (a "VPS"). A small computer in the cloud that stays on 24/7. The Hermes project says it can run on "a $5 VPS." Prices vary by host.
  • Hosted for you by Nous Portal. One-click "Deploy in the cloud." Server costs come out of your Portal credits.

Hermes also needs a "brain": an AI model. You connect one from a provider. That's where most costs come from.

Is Hermes logoHermes for you? A 1-minute check

Count your "yes" answers:

  1. Are you OK typing a command into a terminal, or following an installer with a few steps?
  2. Do you want control over your data and which AI model you use?
  3. Are you willing to spend an afternoon setting it up?
  4. Will you read the safety settings before connecting your email or accounts?
  5. Do you want to avoid a $30–$100/month agent subscription?
  • 4–5 yes: Hermes is a great fit. Start with Part 1.
  • 2–3 yes: Try the desktop app with Nous Portal's quick setup. Stop if it feels like too much.
  • 0–1 yes: Pick a hosted agent instead. Muse has a free plan; Grok Bot and Dots are paid but simpler.

Key strengths

  1. Free software. MIT license. You pay only for models, tools, or hosting you choose.
  2. Any model you want. Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, local models with Ollama, and many more. Switch with hermes model.
  3. Lives in your chat apps. Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, email, and many more from one "gateway."
  4. Learns as it goes. Persistent memory, plus skills it creates and improves from experience.
  5. Plain-English scheduling. Daily reports, backups, and briefings that run on their own.
  6. Built-in safety layers. Approval for dangerous commands, allowlists for who can message it, and optional sandboxes like Docker.

How-to guides

1. How to chat with Hermes logoHermes from Telegram

Who it's for: Anyone who wants Hermes in their pocket.

Steps:

  1. Install Hermes and get one normal chat working first.
  2. Open the dashboard or desktop app → Messaging → Telegram.
  3. Choose Create with QR and scan it in Telegram.
  4. Hermes creates the bot and limits it to your Telegram user ID.
  5. Send your bot a message.

Copy-paste prompts:

Hi! From now on, keep replies under 100 words unless I ask for more.

/sethome

Pro tip: Keep your bot token secret. If it leaks, revoke it with /revoke in @BotFather.

Common mistake: Turning on messaging before a basic chat works. The docs say: get one clean conversation first.

2. How to get a daily briefing

Who it's for: Solo founders and busy people.

Steps:

  1. Make sure Telegram (or another chat app) is connected.
  2. Ask Hermes in plain English for a scheduled job.
  3. Ask it to list your jobs to confirm.
  4. Pause or edit it by asking.

Copy-paste prompts:

Every weekday at 7 AM, search the web for news about [my industry] from the last 24 hours and send me 5 bullet points with links here.

List my scheduled jobs. Pause the news briefing on weekends.

Pro tip: The gateway must be running for scheduled jobs to fire. On a laptop, that means it must be on.

Common mistake: Expecting jobs to run while your computer sleeps. Use a VPS or Portal hosting for 24/7.

3. How to research a topic with sources

Who it's for: Students, writers, and marketers.

Steps:

  1. Turn on web tools (Nous Portal's Tool Gateway includes web search).
  2. Ask a focused question.
  3. Ask for links.
  4. Open and check the links yourself.

Copy-paste prompts:

Research the top 5 email marketing tools for small shops in 2026. Compare price, free plan, and ease of use in a table. Link every claim.

Save this research as a markdown file called email-tools.md.

Pro tip: Ask it to separate facts from opinions.

Common mistake: Trusting prices it finds without checking the vendor's own page.

4. How to run Hermes logoHermes fully local with Ollama

Who it's for: People who want maximum privacy.

Steps:

  1. Install Ollama on your computer and download a model.
  2. Run hermes model and choose a custom or local endpoint.
  3. Check the endpoint, model name, and context length.
  4. Test a simple chat.

Copy-paste prompts:

Summarize this text in 3 bullets: [paste text]

What model are you running on right now?

Pro tip: Local models need a strong computer. Smaller models are faster but less capable.

Common mistake: Expecting local models to match top cloud models on hard tasks.

Free vs paid: what does Hermes logoHermes cost?

Checked October 14, 2026. Hermes itself is always free.

Bucket 1: The model ("brain"). Pick one:

OptionCostGood for
Local models (Ollama)$0 in fees; needs a strong computerPrivacy, tinkering
Nous Portal Free$0 (free models only, standard limits)Trying it out
Nous Portal Plus$20/month ($22 monthly credits, $10 rollover cap)Most beginners
Nous Portal Super$100/month ($110 credits, $50 rollover cap)Heavy daily use
Nous Portal Ultra$200/month ($220 credits, $100 rollover cap)Power users
Your own API keysPay per use, from each providerPeople who already have keys
Your ChatGPT planYour existing ChatGPT subscriptionPeople who already pay OpenAI

Bucket 2: Tools. Web search, image generation, voice, and a cloud browser. Nous Portal paid plans include hosted tool use billed to your credits. Without Portal, you set up separate accounts.

Bucket 3: Hosting. Your own computer is free. A VPS costs a monthly fee from the host. Portal cloud hosting bills to your credits.

When is upgrading worth it?

  • Start on Portal Free or a local model to learn.
  • Get Portal Plus ($20) when you want good models and web tools with no API keys to manage.
  • Add a VPS or Portal hosting only when you need Hermes on 24/7.

Limitations, and when to use a different agent

  • More setup. It's the most hands-on of the four. For no setup, try Muse or Grok Bot.
  • You're the admin. Updates, security, and backups are on you.
  • Only runs when its computer runs. Laptops sleep. Use a VPS or hosting for always-on.
  • Big mistakes are possible if you turn approvals off. Never use "YOLO mode" with real accounts.
  • Want a polished team agent in Slack? Dots or Grok Bot.

FAQ

Is Hermes Agent free? Yes. The software is free and open source (MIT). You pay for the AI model you use, unless you use free or local models, and for any hosting or tools you add.

Is Hermes Agent safe? It has safety layers: approvals for dangerous commands, allowlists, and sandboxes. But it can run commands on your computer. Keep approvals on "manual" or "smart," never "off," and use a separate email account.

Do I need to know how to code? No. The desktop app and Nous Portal quick setup avoid code. But expect some settings and a learning curve.

Hermes Agent vs OpenClaw: which should I use? Both are self-hosted agents. Hermes includes a command to migrate from OpenClaw (hermes claw migrate). We haven't tested OpenClaw for this guide.

Is this Hermès the fashion brand, Hermes parcel delivery, or the Hermes AI model? No. This is Hermes Agent, Nous Research's AI agent. Nous also makes Hermes language models (like Hermes 4), which are AI models, not the agent. Hermès is the French fashion house, and Hermes is also a parcel delivery company. None are related to this agent.
