Is GSGemini Spark safe? Settings to check first
Part of the Gemini Spark beginner track · Google.
What it can touch: your connected Google apps, websites you're signed into, your location, Personal Intelligence (memory of past chats), and any Mac folders you add.
Two kinds of browser:
- Your local Chrome (desktop only). Gemini can reach every site you're signed into, and, with your permission, use passwords saved in Google Password Manager. Your computer and Chrome must stay awake.
- The remote browser in Google's cloud. It keeps working after you close your device. When it hits a sign-in step, the task pauses until you take over.
Confirmations.
- The first time Gemini browses on a device, Chrome asks permission. After that, Gemini asks for confirmation for every task that involves web browsing.
- Google says Spark is designed to ask first before high-stakes actions like spending money or sending emails.
- On a Mac, it's designed to ask before permanently deleting files or sharing them.
- At sign-in pages, it asks you to confirm "Sign in with Google," or to sign in yourself.
Take over anytime. In the task thread, click View live next to "Gemini is using Chrome," then Take over task. Click Go back to Gemini when you're done.
Google's own warnings:
- Don't type sign-in info, payment details, or sensitive info into the task thread.
- Avoid scheduling sensitive tasks. If a schedule runs while you're offline, you may not be able to stop an unintended action.
- To complete tasks, Gemini shares needed info with third parties, which can include your name, contact info, and files.
Mac folders. Gemini can edit, rename, delete, and share files in folders you connect. Backups are temporary (deleted after 24 hours or your next task). Be careful with public cloud-drive folders: anything shared there is visible to others with access.
Privacy. Tasks require Keep Activity. Google's privacy notice says it uses this data to provide and improve its services, including AI models, and that human reviewers see some of it. Don't put anything confidential in a task you wouldn't want a reviewer to see.
Clean-up controls (Settings → Task settings):
- Delete remote browser data signs you out of all sites in the remote browser.
- Delete remote code execution clears files on the remote computer.
- Turn off task mode deletes remote browser and computer data and pauses your schedules (it doesn't delete them).
